About Sumner's Project
Blue Star Moms Collection for the Armed Forces
I collected over 17,000 comfort items (candy, gum, toiletries, etc.) for the Troops fighting overseas in conjunction with the Blue Star Moms. In March and April 2012, I organized and led a project; leading more 52 people who contributed over 250 man hours to complete my project. I also developed a Facebook page about my project and received over 7000 items alone from that facet of my project. Additionally, friends and family that could not come and physically help with my project were able to participate by donating items or giving money and follow along with me through this Facebook page. My original goal was to collect at least 1000 items to help with donations to support our fighting men and women overseas. With the help of my troop and family and friends, I think we succeeded in making a difference in a soldiers life.
The Blue Star Moms, Chapter 101 (established November 2001), is a support through service organization in the San Francisco East Bay area located in Danville, CA. We have members from all over Contra Costa and Alameda Counties. We are moms, joining together to share our pride, our devotion and our worries for our sons and daughters currently serving in all branches of the Armed Forces of the United States, and our sons and daughters who are now veterans. We first came together shortly after the terrorist's attacks on 9/11/2001. We are an official chapter of the Blue Star Mothers of America, a group who formed during World War II.
Since our inception and following in the footsteps of our grandmothers and mothers, we have mailed "a little bit of home" to our sons and daughters serving around the world. Often commanding officers in the field will contact us and let us know that they have a young man or woman who is not receiving any boxes or letters from home. These kids quickly come into our hearts and soon receive a care package with a big blue star on the box, letting them know that good people from Alameda and Contra Costa Counties in California think about and support them. Our boxes have come to have meaning to the troops overseas. We know this from the letters we get receive (letters from the troops coming soon). We depend on your generous donations and volunteer help to continue sending these care packages and notes from home.
All donations are fully tax deductible under our 501(c)3 IRS status. Kindly note your donation is intended for care package supplies/postage on the memo line. Tax ID # 84-1622728.
